More Memorable Moments in Store After First Day of Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion
The four-day Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is officially under way with the first day of action complete. More than 550 historic cars with race provenance across 15 race groups took to the 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course.
Thursday action began with the eldest of the vintage machines getting first crack at the asphalt. Group 1A has race cars that go as far back as Charles Test’s 1911 National Speedway Roadster. Groundbreaking driver Lyn St. James wheeled a supercharged 1925 Bugatti 35C in the same group.
As the day progressed, the groups that followed ranged from sports cars that competed in the original Pebble Beach Road Races to high-powered vintage Can-Am, Formula 5000, and Formula One machines.
The presence of Nissan is the featured marque, a historic first for an Asian automobile manufacturer, is undeniable with a sprawling paddock display that includes some of the most prevalent vehicles in Datsun and Nissan racing history and dignitaries such as Peter Brock, John Morton, and Steve Millen. Those three Datsun and Nissan legends will be onstage on Saturday during the Murray Smith-led Picnic in the Paddock panel.
The Picnic in the Paddock panel will also feature a tribute to Dan Gurney that includes Sir Jackie Stewart, Chris Cord and a musical tribute by Donald Osborne. The first two garages on pit row likewise celebrate the life of the American racing legend.
Audi made a splash with the world debut of the Audi PB 18 e-tron to members of the international media. Afterwards, they hosted a festive gathering for the participants on the Paddock Stage presented by Audi.
Vintage race and lifestyle activities from car shows to book signings and lively displays will be present throughout the bustling paddock and Hagerty Marketplace for the remainder of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.
