The penultimate day of action at the Intercontinental GT Challenge California 8 Hours at Monterey County’s WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca decided the grid positioning for tomorrow’s eight-hour endurance event and awarded champions in Blue Marble Cocktails Radical Cup North America.
The leaders in the Intercontinental GT Challenge categories are Mercedes-AMG Team Strakka Racing (GT3), Strakka Racing (GT3 Pro-Am), US RaceTronics (GT Cup), Team Panoz Racing (GT4) and Herta Autosport (TCR).
Friday action at the Intercontinental GT Challenge California 8 Hours featured some of the best drivers from around the globe adjusting their GT machinery to the 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course at Monterey County’s WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.
Last year, the inaugural edition of the California 8 Hours – the longest ever race at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in its 60 years of existence – proved to be the season decider. Audi Sport Team Magnus took the win with their R8 LMS GT3, driven by Pierre Kaffer, Kelvin Van Der Linde and Markus Winkelhock. For the latter and for Audi that was enough to claim the drivers’ and manufacturers’ titles respectively.
The 2018 Intercontinental GT Challenge will have its final round at the Laguna Seca Raceway California 8 Hours. The longest race on the Monterey peninsula will not only see the contenders in the only global GT3 championship vie for the 2018 trophies, there will also be plenty of GT4 and TCR cars fighting for class honors. In total no fewer than 33 cars will be on the grid on the morning of Sunday October 28.
The longest race in WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca’s 61-year history is expanding with a larger grid full of more of the world’s top GT endurance racers and additional manufacturers at the second annual Intercontinental GT Challenge California 8 Hours on October 26-28. Participation has grown significantly from the 19 participants in the inaugural race with entries nearing 35 teams fielding GT3, GT4, GT Cup and TCR machines from manufacturers that include Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, BMW, Ferrari, Ford, Ginetta, Hyundai, Lamborghini, Mercedes-AMG, Panoz and Porsche.
This year’s championship-winning Pirelli World Challenge GTS drivers and teams are among the GT4 class entries set for the California 8 Hours sports car spectacular, the final event on the Intercontinental GT Challenge, at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on October 26-28.
The 2016 Pirelli World Challenge season finale last weekend provided sports car racing fans the opportunity to see some of the most exciting GT racing of the year at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
Pirelli World Challenge race stewards have penalized initial GT winner Johnny O’Connell of Flowery Branch, Ga., for an on-track infraction on the final lap of Sunday’s Round 20 GT/GTA/GT Cup season finale in the Pirelli World Challenge Championships presented by Nissan at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
