Historic Stock Cars, Small Bore Trans-Am, Motorcycles, Dragsters and More Unite at Spring Classic Showcasing Nitro Revival
When the gates to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca open for the Spring Classic Showcasing Nitro Revival May 18-20, the sights and sounds of everything vintage will fill the senses. The second annual gathering will be the scene of more than 22 historic stock cars, 40 small bore Trans-Am cars, thundering Can-Am cars, and IMSA prototypes among the 178-plus race cars revving to life on the race track.
Nine different groups will race twice each day to give drivers and enthusiastic fans a chance to see motorsport history up close in the open paddock and on the track where they will be challenged by the 2.238-mile road course. There also is a one-hour endurance race on Saturday afternoon for three of the groups where the drivers and pit crews will be tested. The growing fascination of the historic stocks cars like Ford Thunderbirds, Chevrolet Monte Carlos, Dodge Chargers and Oldsmobile Cutlasses will rumble to life and entertain fans as the big cars descend the famed series of turns known simply as The Corkscrew.
The nine race groups are:
- 1966-1974 Can-Am
- 1966-1972 Trans-Am 2.5-Liter
- 1974-2007 Stock Cars
- 1967-1979 Formula Atlantic; 1970-1984 Sports Cars 2-Liter
- 1990-2007 GTP/LMP/WSC/Daytona Prototype/IMSA GTO; 1973-1987 FIA
- SCCA GT & IMSA RS
- 1965-1978 Formula B & 1965-1977 Formula C
- 1967-1980 Formula Ford
- Sports Cars under 2.0 liters
Vintage Motorcycles on Track
Complementing the racing are 40 vintage motorcycles that will emerge from their paddock display to take exhibition laps each day. From Nortons and Yamahas to Ducatis and Indians, the bikes provide an entertaining look at the classic machines at speed.
Top Fuel Dragsters ‘Line of Fire’ with Nitro Revival
A new addition this year is the arrival of Nitro Revival. Vintage drag cars and racing personalities, such as “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, will be present in the paddock throughout the weekend with special activities taking place on Saturday, May 19 that includes push-start demonstrations on pit lane. Following the afternoon’s road course activity, a formation of nitromethane-powered dragsters will have their engines roar to life in a “Line of Fire” mass fire-up that promises to take breaths away and ignite the senses.
Hot rodding culture will be further celebrated with Ace’s Hot Rod Hangout, an assembly of pre-1973 hot rods and customs. Two hundred hot rods are expected to stage together in the paddock to provide a welcomed and entertaining element to the Spring Classic.
