The third round of the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge roars into Monterey May 2-4 as part of the Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix, powered by Mazda weekend with teams gunning for valuable championship points.

The 12-race series that runs with the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship is one of the most popular with racing enthusiasts as the cars closely resemble their street-going brethren. Each entry is straight from the manufacturer showroom floor; however, looks can be deceiving as they race side-by-side with performance and safety modifications.

Two classes compete this year: Grand Sport (GS) and Street Tuner (ST).

The GS class is comprised of the top performing cars that include the Aston Martin Vantage, BMW M3, Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang Boss 302 R, Nissan 370Z, Porsche 997 and Subaru WRX-STI. Tuned to produce between 350 and 405 horsepower, they are capable of speeds in excess of 160 mph.

The ST class is also production car-based and receives fewer performance modifications than does the GS division. Limited to four- and six-cylinder, and rotary engines, the ST class restricts horsepower to between 170 and 240. Fans will see the familiar BMW 128 and 325, Honda Civic Si, Hyundai Genesis, Mazda MX-5, Nissan Altima and Porsche Boxster and Cayman challenging one another.

This much is for certain. The drivers and teams take the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge very seriously. Given the number of paint-swapping, hard-charging tactics that result in frequent lead changes, the racing action doesn’t stop until the checkered flag is waved.
