Pirelli World Challenge Sees Intense Action and Sets Sights on Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca
The 2015 Pirelli World Challenge season is off to an incredible start after two action-packed events and will have a full head of steam when it comes to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Sept. 11-13 for the season finale.
The Pirelli World Challenge is in its 26th season and has grown to include seven classes of sprint-format sports car competition, with two rounds of racing almost every event weekend. The first two events saw full fields, including 100 entries at the season-opening event, with the third race on the schedule, in April, already announced as full. Three different winners in the top GT class in the first four rounds means the competition is close and the field is wide open.
A driver lineup that includes road racing stars like Olivier Beretta, Peter Cunningham, Ryan Dalziel, Chris Dyson, Ryan Eversley, Kevin Estre, Johnny O’Connell and Andy Pilgrim will test their cars to the limits on the Corkscrew and throughout Mazda Raceway’s 11-turn, 2.238-mile traditional road course. The list of automobile manufacturers in the four GT (Grand Touring) classes is a Who’s Who of the world’s top sports car marques: Ferrari, McLaren, Aston Martin, Porsche, Bentley, BMW, Lamborghini, Acura, Cadillac, Nissan, Mercedes and Audi. The three TC (Touring Car) classes host an equally strong roster of manufacturers: Mazda, Porsche, Nissan, Ford, Honda, Kia, Volvo, Volkswagen, Chevrolet, Mini Cooper, and Scion.
“When it comes to intense rivalries among drivers and automobile manufacturers, few series can match Pirelli World Challenge,” says Gill Campbell, CEO/general manager of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. “When teams arrive in Monterey this September, it’s going to be all-out racing for world championship honors.”
