The Hills are Alive with the Sound of MotoGP – Day 2 Update
Lorenzo Turns Fastest Practice Lap Time

Fans swarm toward San Carlo Honda Gresini’s Marco Simoncelli.

There must be something in the warm California afternoon sun that suits Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo, who turned in the fastest lap of the two practice sessions at 1’22.056, just 0.141 ahead of Dani Pedrosa of the Repsol Honda Team. Casey Stoner, also of Repsol Honda Team, captured the fastest time in the morning session, circling the 2.238-mile circuit in 1’22.402.

Describing his ride, Lorenzo said, “I am very happy to be back riding here at Laguna, a track I love. Today went pretty well, the bike felt ok. P1 I’m happy with but we need to try to improve corner entry for the bike because there are some tenths in that and it will give me more confidence turning in. It’s not so bad to begin and we will try to go faster tomorrow.”

The American contingent was led by Ben Spies whose best lap time placed him in fourth; Nicky Hayden followed in seventh; Colin Edwards in eighth and Ben Bostrom, a long-time AMA rider who is making his MotoGP debut, came in 18th. Bostrom shaved precious time off his second practice session as he became more familiar with the all-new machine.

During each practice session crowds lined the fences, filed into grandstand seats and perched themselves on the hill and The Corkscrew to cheer on their favorite riders.

MotoGP paddock passes have been sold out for weeks, and given the crowds filling in around San Carlo Honda Gresini’s Marco Simoncelli seeking autographs and photos, they arrived early. Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is one of only two circuits where fans can get as close as they do to the riders and teams.

Today’s schedule kicks up the pace and becomes more intense, heading into tomorrow’s races. MotoGP riders head out for their third free practice of the weekend prior to the tense-filled one-hour afternoon qualifying session.

Complementing the MotoGP World Championship is a full slate of qualifying. Full grids will be seen for AMA Pro Daytona SportBike, AMA Pro Motorcycle Superstore.com SuperSport, AMA Pro National Guard SuperBike, and FIM e-Power International Championship. The day’s lone race is an 18-lap AMA Pro America SuperSport race beginning at 3:40.
