Ferrari Challenge Winners Crowned at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca
The first major motorsports event of the 2018 motorsports calendar at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is officially in the books with the conclusion of the Ferrari Challenge. The Ferrari Challenge North America series awarded winners for the second straight day with several drivers able to repeat their feats on the 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course.
Sunday Race 2 winners are Peter Ludwig (Trofeo Pirelli), John Boyd (Trofeo Pirelli AM), Thomas Tippl (Coppa Shell), John Megrue (Coppa Shell AM), and Martin Burroues (458 Challenge).
Cooper MacNeil was unable to return and double down on his Saturday heroics after competing in the Mid-Ohio round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship – also in a Ferrari for Scuderia Corsa – earlier in the day. In his absence, the wide-open Trofeo Pirelli category went to Peter Ludwig in a rout. Ludwig, who has been battling MacNeil atop the points standings, began Race 2 from the pole position and pulled away from the rest of the grid throughout the race.
Ludwig stood on the podium alongside Joseph Rubbo and Chris Cagnazzi. It was Rubbo’s second podium in as many days. John Boyd was able to capture Trofeo Pirelli AM honors, for the second straight day. Ludwig was the only Race 2 winner who did not also score an event victory on Saturday.
Thomas Tippl won the Coppa Shell race for the second straight day. The Scuderia Corsa-Ferrari of Beverly Hills driver wheeled the red No. 121 to a quicker pace than Frenchman Chris Carel. Actor Michael Fassbender continued his positive strides in the series, improving from yesterday’s P5 finish to reach the podium at P3. John Megrue earned the win in Ferrari Coppa Shell AM as he did in Race 1 on Saturday.
Burroues completed his sweep of the 458 class which utilizes the 458 Challenge EVO cars that were the standard in the series before the 488 Challenge was introduced last season. Burroues once again was challenged by Trevor Baek, who took his second podium. Phil Trigiani placed third. Lisa Clark, who was recently featured on the fifth episode of the Netflix Series Fastest Car, had a P8 finish.
The active spring season at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca continues with Cars and Coffee on Saturday, May 12; the Amgen Tour of California Men’s Stage 3 Finish on Tuesday, May 15; and the Spring Classic Showcasing Nitro Revival May 18-20, a vintage car race that features historic motorcycle exhibitions and reunion of legendary drag racing cars and personalities.
The beginning of summer will trigger a blockbuster line-up of events that include the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship GEICO Motorcycle U.S. Round featuring MotoAmerica Battle of Monterey, June 22-24; Monterey Pre-Reunion, August 18-19; Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, August 23-26; Porsche Rennsport Reunion VI, Sept. 27-30; and California 8 Hours presented by Pirelli World Challenge, Oct. 25-27.
