Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion to celebrate 50th anniversary of IMSA

Hurley Haywood has been named Grand Marshal of the 2019 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on August 15-18. Considered among the greatest drivers in endurance racing history, Haywood is a major part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA), which is the featured marque at this year’s Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.

50 Years of IMSA History to be Celebrated at Popular WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca Event

Officials from WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) today announced that IMSA will be the featured marque for the 2019 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion to be held at the world-renowned facility in Monterey, California on the weekend of Aug. 15-18, 2019.

The event will feature 50 years of IMSA history with a variety of race cars and personalities from throughout the series’ rich history, which includes several races on the famed, 2.238-mile WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca circuit.

SCRAMP Awarded Prestigious FIA Award for Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

 

The FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile), the world’s premier motorsport governing body, awarded world championship trophies at its annual gala and prize giving ceremony Dec. 8 at the Palace of Versailles. Among the trophy presentations was the FIA Founding Members’ Club Heritage Cup, which was bestowed to the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), which manages the County of Monterey-owned Laguna Seca Recreation Area, in recognition of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.

Motor Racing Legend Tom Kristensen to Speak at Picnic in the Paddock for Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

Danish sports car racing legend, nine-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner, six-time 24 Hours of Sebring winner, and 2013 FIA World Endurance champion Tom Kristensen will share his experiences as the highlighted guest speaker at the annual Picnic in the Paddock on Saturday, Aug. 19. The annual picnic is traditionally a fan favorite during the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, which will be held Aug. 17-20 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Run Groups Announced for Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion August 17-20
Celebrating Two Diamond Jubilees

The 14 historic race car run groups are set for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, August 17-20, 2017 as owners, drivers and enthusiasts now begin focusing their sights on applying for the limited 550-grid field that will be accepted to compete.

Returning to the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion for the first time since 2013 are the remarkable Formula Juniors that ran between 1958 and 1963. Celebrating its Diamond Jubilee international tour at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, there will be two groups to accommodate the large numbers of cars expected to enter.

Mazda returns iconic 767B racecar to the track Aug. 18-21

Earlier this year Mazda celebrated the 25th anniversary of its 1991 Le Mans win in the iconic green and orange Mazda 787B. While the 787B is the crown jewel of Mazda’s global vintage racecar collection, there were others that paved the way. One such car was the Mazda 767B which competed at Le Mans in 1989. 

Now, 27 years later, after a two-year restoration, it is part of Mazda North American Operations (MNAO)’s collection, and will return to the track at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion August 18-21, at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

A Passion for the Past as the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Concludes

It was significant that Zak Brown’s Lola T332, in the hands of Richard Dean, won Sunday’s Formula 5000 race at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion: when the last professional Formula 5000 race was held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca 40 years ago (October 12, 1975), it was won by Mario Andretti in the same car.

Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is an Event of Legends

In motorsports, legends are made, not born. Constant reminders of this sprang up throughout the day today at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, a four-day event at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca where tens of thousands of people visit during Monterey’s Classic Car Week to get their fill of cool historic cars racing wheel-to-wheel.

History in Motion at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is about rarely seen race cars that are authentic and historic, showcased not on a lawn but at speed at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the world-famous 2.238-mile circuit nestled in the hills of Monterey. For two days, 550 cars have been screaming through their practice runs in preparation for the first official day of weekend racing that also will see a surge of fans pass through the gates for the very purpose of seeing – and hearing – their favorite racing machines from bygone eras spring back to life, as if time had never passed.

UNBRIDLED PASSION at Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

Today, when John Atzbach of Seattle drove his 1965 Shelby GT 350 Mustang through the turns and straights of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, it was not because he was rehearsing for the upcoming weekend of racing at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Rather, he was accommodating a special photo shoot – squeezed between practice sessions for 15 groups of historic cars here - with three of nine GT 350s (from 1965 and ‘66) showcased in this year’s Heritage Display for the featured marque.

Former Indy 500 Racers Lyn St. James and Dominic Dobson Talk the “Future of Restoration”

Former Indy 500 racers Lyn St. James and Dominic Dobson will be part of a special restoration-themed panel discussion set for 1:15 p.m. on Saturday, August 15 during the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The 45-minute presentation – “Young People and Old Cars: The Future of Restoration” – is sponsored and hosted by the Hagerty Education Program at America’s Car Museum (HEP). It will be broadcasted live from the track during a race intermission.
