Rea Closes Points Gap with Wins at Wild Misano WorldSBK Round
It was a wild weekend of racing at the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship Pata Riviera di Rimini Round at Misano. Jonathan Rea closed the gap on Álvaro Bautista to 16 points with victories in Race 1 and Race 2. Bautista won the Tissot Superpole Race but crashed out of Race 2 while leading as he had done in the previous round.
The first day of the event featured Michael van der Mark top the charts during Free Practice 2 but getting airborne during a crash that required radius surgery. As the events got underway, a wet and wild Race 1 took place in which Alex Lowes crashed while leading and Rea was able to capitalize. Tom Sykes earned BMW its first podium finish since 2013, and Loris Baz finished No. 4 with the new Ten Kate Racing Yamaha that was still being built four weeks earlier.
Bautista took the win in the Tissot Superpole Race. Though Rea fell while trying to keep pace with Bautista, he impressed in his ability to remount and salvage a fifth-place finish.
Three Kawasaki riders stood atop the podium after Race 2. Impressive 22-year-old Turkish rider Toprak Razgatlioglu led the final laps and seemed poised for his first win until Rea was able to use his savvy to get around him on the final lap. Rea’s Kawasaki Factory Racing teammate Leon Haslam joined them on the podium.
